CPC Holds 6th Annual City Advocacy Day for an Inclusive Budget

New York, NY -- Chinese-American Planning Council (CPC) held its 6th Annual City Advocacy Day at the steps of City Hall, uniting over 500 community members and elected officials to advocate for policy and budget priorities that prioritize the needs of Asian American, immigrant, and low-income New Yorkers, who have been disproportionately impacted by COVID-19.

CPC's President and CEO, Wayne Ho, emphasized the critical role of the city's budget in addressing both the immediate emergency and the long-term recovery efforts.

“The triple pandemics of COVID, economic devastation, and anti-Asian hate have highlighted the disparities faced by marginalized New Yorkers, and CPC remains steadfast in our commitment to advocating for policy and budget priorities that address these inequities,” said Ho. “We urge the City of New York to fund human services workers, maintain social services and safety net programs, and support limited English proficient communities and Asian Americans facing discrimination. Together, we can build a more equitable city and achieve a collective vision for dignity, justice, and care.”

CPC’s priority issues this year include:

  • Raising wages for City-contracted human services workers to $21/hour and implementing an annual Cost of Living Adjustment
  • Resisting cuts to programs and government agencies that provide support and resources to AAPI, immigrant and low-income New Yorkers
  • Growing the AAPI Community Support initiative which provides community-based organizations with resources to $7.5 million
  • Investing in programs like Adult Literacy, Summer Youth Employment Program, senior services, and immigrant services
  • Investing in emergency legal services and renewing funding for childcare for undocumented children - Promise NYC program

The rally was attended by several elected officials who stood in solidarity with CPC and called for greater funding equity to the community. These officials included Council Members Alexa Avilés, Lincoln Restler, Althea Stevens, Sandra Ung, and representatives from the Office of the Public Advocate Jumaane D. Williams.

Prior to the rally, CPC staff and community members met virtually with over 20 elected officials to discuss the organization's policy priorities and the urgent needs of the community.

CPC's 6th Annual City Advocacy Day highlights the organization's commitment to advocating for and prioritizing the needs of vulnerable New Yorkers. With the ongoing impact of COVID-19, it is essential that policies and budget decisions center around supporting those who have been most affected.
