Our Community, Our Stories – CPC Supplies Resources and Guidance to Thrive: Cui Ni Deng

The CPC Leadership Council has been actively reaching out to recent community members, past staff and program alumni who are eager to share how CPC had a positive influence on their lives growing up, and who are now interested in giving back to their community. Our tenth community story features Cui Ni Deng. An essential worker, Cui Ni Deng worked diligently and compassionately, caring for her client(s) despite the many unknowns New Yorkers faced in the spring of 2020.

Our Community, Our Stories – CPC Fosters Power Through Empowerment: Justin LaBoy

CPC launched the "Our Community, Our Stories" campaign to share the personal stories of different community members directly impacted by CPC. Our ninth community story features Justin LaBoy. Singer-songwriter, performer, actor (under the stage name Justice LaBrave), and freelance video editor, Justin LaBoy’s life has been indelibly shaped by a CPC program, CPC Project Reach. What started in 1971 as a small youth program in a storefront on Eldridge Street has become a unique and uniquely networked organization that supports Asian, Black, Latinx, and immigrant teenagers to become future leaders in the larger movement for social justice.

The "Our Community, Our Stories" campaign was launched to share the stories of different community members directly impacted by CPC. Our eighth community story features Alvin Lin. In 2008, Alvin Lin set out to find a new job. His aunt suggested he look into the Hospitality Careers Training Program at CPC Queens Community Center.

Our Community, Our Stories – CPC Promotes Lifetime Achievement: Karen Liu

CPC launched the "Our Community, Our Stories" campaign to share the personal stories of different community members directly impacted by CPC. Our seventh community story features Karen Liu. Karen Chang Liu, CPC’s former Assistant Executive Director and former Director of Childhood Development Services, grew up in a modest household in Hawaii. “I was shy. I was a typical Asian because we were brought up with ‘you don't talk too much, but when you speak, you speak the truth and with a humble heart.’”

Our Community, Our Stories - CPC Inspires Beneficiaries to Give Back: Vanessa Chiu

CPC launched the "Our Community, Our Stories" campaign to share the personal stories of different community members directly impacted by CPC. Our sixth community story features Vanessa Chiu. Vanessa Chiu was first introduced to CPC through our afterschool programs. Her parents immigrated from Hong Kong and worked at garment factories. She recalled watching her parents at work, making games out of whatever she could, “trying not to get injured, get into too much trouble or be too much in the way,” she said.

Our Community, Our Stories - CPC Develops Life Skills: Jubi Qayum

In celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, CPC launched the “Our Community, Our Stories” campaign to share the personal stories of different community members directly impacted by CPC. Our fifth community story features Jubi Qayum. Jubi Qayum was born and raised in New York City. His parents were born in Bangladesh, and they immigrated to New York City in the early 90s. Jubi has two older brothers and one younger sister. Jubi was originally born in Harlem and eventually moved to the Lower East Side (LES). Since moving to the LES Jubi has always felt strongly connected to his neighborhood and was eager to be more involved in his community.

In celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, CPC launched the “Our Community, Our Stories” campaign to share the personal stories of different community members directly impacted by CPC. Our fourth community story features Karen Li. Karen Li is a high-energy alumna who is now studying Ethnicity, Race and Migration at Yale. For her, the future has many possibilities. Li has a strong interest in social justice efforts and is considering going into grassroots organizing and/or nonprofit management “I just imagine a better world, being a world where we can communicate with each other, where people are more compassionate.”

Our third community story features Jimmy Chen. Jimmy is a young entrepreneur and real estate developer, who despite his youth, is already committed to giving back to his community.

Our second community story features Mary Cheng. Mary is not only a CPC alumnus, but thanks to that experience growing up, she is now CPC’s Director of Childhood Development Services.

Our first community story features the family of Billie and Wendy Chu. The Chu family has been involved with CPC for three generations.
