Essential Worker Highlight: Joanna Chan, Director, Brooklyn Enrichment Services

Five weeks ago, we kicked off our essential workers campaign. This week focuses on Joanna Chan, Director, Brooklyn Enrichment Services. Joanna normally oversees five of our school-based afterschool programs in Brooklyn but moved into an emergency responder role at our Regional Enrichment Center in the wake of COVID-19. She is also one of the supervisors of CPC's Resource Navigators Program, a which supports those affected by COVID-19 with accessing assistance while quarantined.

CPC Summer Alternative Program Prepares Young People for Careers

CPC launched and operated a successful CPC Summer Alternative Program (SAP), a virtual career readiness initiative for NYC high school and college participants, in July and August. A total of 155 students, including many low-income, immigrant, and first-in-family youth, participated. Through SAP, they gained essential job readiness skills, explored various career pathways, learned from working professionals in different sectors, and received $1,000 each in cash assistance.

CPC Rallies with Nonprofits to Save the Indirect Cost Rate

On September 15th, CPC joined the Human Services Council, Council Member Ben Kallos, and dozens of human services providers to call for the Mayor to reinstate funding for indirect costs and to end retroactive budget cuts to the Indirect Cost Rate (ICR) Funding Initiative. More than 140 people participated in the rally, including Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, Council Member Brad Lander, and Council Member Helen Rosenthal.
