CPC STATEMENT ON THE RIOTS AT THE U.S. CAPITOL
In the wake of the riots at the U.S. Capitol, the Chinese-American Planning Council (CPC) is grateful that elected officials and their staff are safe and sends our best wishes to them and their families. The last four years of hateful and bigoted policies, as well as the blatant denial of Presidential election results for the last couple months, lead to this moment.
“We need to name what happened yesterday: this was White supremacy. The mostly White protesters did not face heavily armed police officers, get pepper sprayed, beaten by batons, arrested en masse, or worse. Imagine if the individuals who breached the Capitol were Black, Brown, Asian, and Indigenous. Yesterday’s protesters breached the Capitol because their candidate refuses to accept that he lost the election by over four million votes. Black, Brown, Asian, and Indigenous protesters and their allies marched throughout the spring and summer because the police continue to brutalize and kill Black individuals. There is no moral equivalence between these protests. One perpetuates racism while the other fights against racism,” said Wayne Ho, CPC President and CEO. “We must simultaneously acknowledge the historic events that took place in Georgia yesterday. For the first time, Georgia will have a Black man and a Jewish man as their two Senators. It took years of organizing, mostly by Black women, to achieve yesterday’s election results. We are heartened by the amazing turnout of diverse voters throughout Georgia and are grateful to the many Asian American organizers who helped to drive this turnout. We must continue to work to be anti-racist, anti-sexist, anti-xenophobic, anti-homophobic, and anti-transphobic in the United States, in New York City, and in our own organization.”
CPC looks forward to working with the incoming Presidential Administration and Congressional Representatives to undo much of the racist and anti-immigrant policies championed by the President. We will continue advocating for policies and programs that advance and transform our communities, promoting dignity and economic security for our marginalized community members.
