CPC and NYC's Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs to Jointly Host Immigrant Resource Fair
The Chinese‐American Planning Council (CPC) and the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA) will be holding an Immigrant Resource Fair on Saturday, April 21, 2018 from 11:00am to 3pm at CPC Queens Community Center, located on 133-14 41st Ave, Flushing, NY 11355. This will be an open door community event and all community members are welcome to attend to learn more about City resources addressing issues including housing, immigration legal services, access to health care, education, human rights, and more. Many partners have played an important role in making this resource fair available to New Yorkers, including Special Guests U.S. Rep. Grace Meng, State Senator Toby Stavisky, Assembly Member Ron Kim, Assembly Member Nily Rozic, and Council Member Peter Koo.
It’s no coincidence that CPC and MOIA are bringing this Immigrant Resource Fair during Immigrant Heritage Week 2018 (IHW 2018). This year marks the 15th annual IHW celebration and we couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate the history, culture, and contributions of NYC’s vibrant immigrant communities than by providing access to crucial City and community resources. A wide variety of representatives from City agencies and community organizations will present and conduct further outreach at the resource fair, including: Catholic Charities Neighborhood Services; City Commissioner on Human Rights; Department of Consumer Affairs; Department of Health and Mental Hygiene; Garden of Hope; NYC Health + Hospitals/Jamaica; NYC Housing and Preservation and Development; and NYC Human Resources Administration.
“The Chinese-American Planning Council is thrilled to collaborate with the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs to hold an Immigrant Resource Fair during Immigrant Heritage Week 2018. Working jointly with MOIA and numerous other city agencies, CPC will be a one-stop shop for all our free, helpful city resources. Whether it’s housing, legal, education, health, or human rights assistance that community members are looking for, we will have it,” said Wayne Ho, President and CEO of the Chinese-American Planning Council. “I would like to thank all of the CPC staff and City agencies involved in this effort. With our Immigrant Resource Fair, I hope that we will continue to advance our community by ensuring access to important City services.”
“All New Yorkers should be able to have equal access to the great resources the City has to offer. Events like this Immigrant Resource Fair give us more opportunities to connect immigrant communities with important information and services, including IDNYC and free and safe immigration legal help,” said Sonia Lin, General Counsel and Policy Director at the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs. “We are glad to partner with CPC and our sister agencies for what is sure to be a fantastic event.”
“With the President continuing to attack immigrant communities, it is critical that immigrant New Yorkers have access to the information and resources that they require; resources such as housing, health care, education, legal assistance and other types of important services that are offered by our city,” said U.S. Representative Grace Meng. “I am pleased to join the Chinese-American Planning Council and the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs in providing this valuable information to immigrants in Queens, and I’m proud to join them in standing with New York’s immigrant families.” “In a city such as New York, there are so many resources and opportunities for immigrant communities, but, unfortunately, many people are not aware such resources exist,” said State Senator Toby Ann Stavisky. “This resource fair, sponsored by the Chinese-American Planning Council and the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs, is a great way to demonstrate all the City has to offer. I hope everyone takes full advantage of this event to learn more about the resources available to them.”
Assemblymember Ron Kim said, “I am proud to join the Chinese-American Planning Council, the Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs, and my fellow elected officials in sponsoring this Immigrant Resource Fair. In the current national climate, there has been widespread anxiety and fear among many communities about the reach and impact of certain policies and agencies relating to immigration. It is vital that New Yorkers concerned about access to government resources or legal services, especially in relation to their immigration status, come to this fair. My colleagues and I are truly thankful to the staff of both CPC and city agencies for their hard work in organizing and hosting the event, and hope that it will make a real difference in terms of protecting New York’s vulnerable communities.”
“The Chinese-American Planning Council and the Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs are both leaders in providing comprehensive programming that serves our immigrant communities and families. I am proud to support their collaboration for the Immigrant Resource Fair, which will provide essential tools and outreach to ensure that all New Yorkers will have equal access to public services and programs,” said Assemblywoman Nily Rozic.
Council Member Peter Koo stated, “The Immigrant Resource Fair is an excellent opportunity for our newest New Yorkers to learn about the wide variety of assistance available to them courtesy of the City of New York and the immigrant support groups that reside here. Many new immigrants are unaware that we have programs, services and professionals waiting to lend them a hand and help get them adjusted to life in a new world. Thank you to CPC, the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs and all our partners for coming together to make sure our immigrant community has access to the information and resources they need to succeed.”
