Within the past week, CPC staff have publicly commented and addressed growing safety concerns amidst increased hate crimes.

CPC Deputy Director of Queens Community Services Marilla Li comments on Christina Yuna Lee's murder in a Washington Post article. With her advocacy work, she is trying to create structural changes that would prevent someone who may be mentally ill or homeless from attacking people who look like her.

"I feel really compelled to educate my fellow Chinese or Asian community members on how to really find some compassion in this moment, for all parties involved." At the same time, "I have to find a little bit of time to also figure out how to process and allow myself to be really, really sad about it."

CPC Director of Childhood Development Services Mary Cheng commented on the growing safety concerns for community members in Chinatown in an article published on NY1.

"Right at dusk, it empties out really quickly because they just don't know who is going to be following behind them or walking behind them. There is an overwhelming feeling of defeat and how do we change this. It doesn't seem like in the past two years there has been any movement or push from the city do to more for the community in any way."

President and CEO Wayne Ho comments on the need for proactive advocacy for our community in a Central Recorder article.

"Year after year, we've been telling elected officials, we need better funding and resources to reflect our diverse community. It takes unfortunate instances of violence to see any sort of substantive resources and change."
