Recommendations on Philanthropic Actions Aimed at Supporting Immigrants
In a webinar hosted on April 15th by Grantmakers Concerned with Immigrants and Refugees, CPC President and CEO Wayne Ho spoke about COVID-19's impact on immigrant communities, especially Asian American and Pacific Islanders in New York City, in order to mobilize philanthropy's efforts. Speakers included Lucas Benitez, Fair Food Program, Coalition of Immokalee Workers, Julia Perkins, Coalition of Immokalee Workers, and Wendy Cervantes, Director, CLASP. The webinar was hosted by Aryah Somers Landsberger, Vice President of Programs, and Kevin Douglas, Director of National Programs, of Grantmakers Concerned with Immigrants and Refugees.
Grantmakers Concerned with Immigrants and Refugees published a list of recommendations for philanthropic action, including:
- supporting cash assistance
- increasing access to COVID-19 information in culturally and linguistically competent and accessible mediums, venues, and platforms
- focusing on services for undocumented populations
- supporting continued advocacy at the federal level for more inclusive eligibility criteria
in any additional COVID-19 relief packages - halting evictions, utility shut offs, administrative fines, and other practices that throw individuals and families into crisis
- reducing or eliminating enforcement, detention, and deportation during COVID-19
- expanding anti-hate and anti-discrimination efforts
- investing in Census 2020 outreach
- strengthen the capacity of immigrant-led and immigrant-serving organizations
