“My Family” Warms Hearts and Wins Young Poet’s Society Competition

In honor of the season for giving, NYC Department of Youth & Community Development (DYCD) hosted a “Young Poet’s Society” competition. The competition invited youth who are enrolled in a DYCD funded program to submit a poem around the theme of “family”.

Sitora Chorshanbaeva from CPC’s Homecrest COMPASS program at PS153 was one out of five “Young Poet’s Society” winners. Sitora is also the only fourth grader who is on the panel of winners; the other winners are in seventh grade.

On December 17, 2016, Sitora and her fellow awardees were invited to attend the DYCD’s “Performance Festival: A Celebration of the Decades”. Sitora was acknowledged for her poem “My Family” with her proud parents (picture above) and Ms. Huang, Director of CPC’s Homecrest COMPASS program, in the audience.

"The poem is about my family. I didn't think I was going to win but I am very happy that I did!" said Sitora. Ms. Huang said during the event, "As the only fourth grade student that won in the Young Poet's Society Competition, we are extremely proud of Sitora! We encourage Sitora to continue writing more poetry!"

Congratulations Sitora!

“My Family”
By Sitora Chorshanbaeva, 4th Grade, CPC Homecrest COMPASS

My family is a part of my heart, and they are like a dream tart.
They are really just heroes, and the anger they have is zero.
My family is the lightest light,
They are just as bright as night.
They always like to interest me, by teaching me how to make homemade tea!
My family is like the bright sun,
They are my song that is sung.
My family is very nice, and they really barely sacrifice.
My family is really nice, and teach me how to be me.
