Chinese-American Planning Council Statement on Presidential Election
New York, NY – Since our founding in 1965, there have been 11 Presidents and only one Chinese-American Planning Council. We have been a constant for six decades.
Yesterday's Presidential election will affect the day-to-day lives of New Yorkers. The President will determine policies on racial justice, immigration reform, reproductive rights, LGBTQ+ rights, health care, education, economic opportunity, social safety net, and so much more. We know from President Trump's previous administration that he intends to target the most marginalized New Yorkers, the very communities that CPC serves and empowers.
More than ever, we intend to continue serving our community members and fighting for policies and budgets that uplift AAPI and communities of color, immigrants, and low-income New Yorkers. Regardless of who is the President, CPC and our subsidiary organizations will be there for our community members and staff. We will continue to lead with our organizational values – we are our community, we embrace our community, and we empower our community. Our values are how we serve and advocate, how we center our diverse community members, and how we support our diverse staff.
We will remain a safe, inclusive, equitable space for all community members and staff. We will remain a trusted partner for all community members, especially those who are undocumented, LGBTQ+, speakers of languages other than English, with disabilities, living with HIV/AIDS, and low-income. We will ensure that staff of all racial, ethnic, gender, immigrant, sexual orientation, ability, and language backgrounds are valued. We will provide a safe space for community members and staff of all backgrounds and beliefs to be supported. We will hold decision makers accountable not only to understanding our community’s needs but also to passing policies, funding, and programs to support our staff and community members. We will stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies in the fight to ensure our community members can thrive.
