First-Ever Family Support Fair for Individuals with Developmental Disabilities
On June 22, 2017 CPC and members of the Developmental Disability Interagency Partnership held a press conference to announce the first-ever Family Support Fair for Chinese-speaking caregivers of individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities and Chinese-speaking self-advocating individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities. The Family Support Fair is co-sponsored by CPC, Alliance for Families with Developmental Needs, Charles B. Wang Community Health Center, General Human Outreach in the Community, University Settlement, and YAI.
During this fair, Chinese speaking caregivers and self-advocates will have the opportunity to attend one of five workshops and connect with service providers including the Alliance for Families with Developmental Needs, CARES, Charles B. Wang Community Health Center, CPC, Disability Rights New York, General Human Outreach in the Community, Inc., MassMutual, Mental Health Association of NYC, New York Public Library, NYS Developmental Disabilities Planning Council, NYS Office for People with Developmental Disabilities, Rose F. Kennedy Center, University Settlement, and YAI.
Developmental disabilities does not discriminate and affect many Chinese families no matter their background. We believe there is a great need to combat the stigma of developmental disabilities and to provide support to families. Moreover, there is a lack of linguistically and culturally relevant services available hence we have decided to join our resources together to maximize the support and make available resources so that our families can support their loved ones.
