CPC Celebrates Resilience, Unity, and Community Impact at Annual Lunar New Year Gala

On March 5th, CPC hosted our annual Lunar New Year Gala at Pier 60, Chelsea Piers, bringing together more than 550 guests in celebration of 61 years of service to immigrant and low-income New Yorkers. The gala raised over $1 million, with 100% of proceeds directly supporting CPC's expansion of services and advocacy for community members, as well as supporting our human services, home care, and affordable housing workers. The gala celebrated three distinguished honorees for their contributions to the community: Pitta & Baione LLP, Peggy Sheng, and Chang M. Liu. Each was recognized for their profound impact on the lives of community members served by CPC. Elected officials in attendance included Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Council Speaker Julie Menin, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, Comptroller Mark Levine, Council Members Shekar Krishnan, Linda Lee, and Kevin Riley.

CPC Statement on Misinformation Circulated by Ain't I A Woman Campaign

The Chinese-American Planning Council (CPC) is deeply concerned and disappointed that the Ain’t I A Woman Campaign staff and organizers—not the home care workers—continue to mischaracterize legal proceedings to attack CPC. Most recently, they circulated a flyer distorting the facts and spreading false claims about a New York Supreme Court decision to falsely target CPC.

CPC Joins Elected Officials on Stopping SNAP Skimming as Food Insecurity Worsens

On March 3rd, CPC joined Congressman Dan Goldman and Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal at CPC’s Open Door Older Adult Center for a press conference to stop SNAP skimming benefits. Fraudsters have been stealing benefits from vulnerable New Yorkers, forcing parents to skip meals so their children can eat and leaving older adults to line up at food pantries as early as 3 a.m. During the press conference, Wayne Ho, President and CEO of CPC, highlighted our latest policy report that shows the devastating impact of federal budget cuts on food security for AAPI and immigrant communities in New York City.

CPC Beacon Community Center Students Celebrate Lunar New Year with Creative Arts and Toys

On February 13th, CPC Beacon Community Center at John J. Pershing Intermediate School 220 hosted a Lunar New Year celebration for students, where they enjoyed delicious food, spent meaningful time with friends, and fully embraced the spirit of community. From detailed origami designs to colorful arts and crafts and impressive 3D figures representing Lunar New Year traditions, students brought culture to life through their hands and imagination.

CPC and Citi Team Up to Teach Culture and Financial Literacy

On February 7th, CPC partnered with Citi's Chinatown branch to host a Lunar New Year celebration for more than two dozen children from CPC's School-Age Child Care Center at Chrystie Street and their families. The event focused on culture, creativity, and early financial education. Families enjoyed a communal story reading, an interactive activity exploring good and bad money habits, and an art competition inviting children to illustrate what "prosperity" means to them.

CPC Advocates for AAPI Communities in Meeting with NYC's Department of Consumer and Worker Protection Commissioner

On February 5th, CPC joined community partners and Council Member Alexa Avilés to meet with Commissioner Levine of the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection. Steve Mei, Director of CPC Brooklyn Community Services, highlighted how vulnerable members of the AAPI community often fall prey to bad actors due to their urgent need for essential services, from immigration and housing assistance to benefits access.

CPC Holds 8th Annual Albany Day of Action

On February 4th, CPC convened over 200 staff, community members, and advocates for its 8th Annual Albany Day of Action, the organization’s largest advocacy event of the year. Through rallies and drop offs with elected officials at the state capitol, staff and community members amplified their voices and advanced CPC’s three key policy priorities: securing New York State funding for infrastructure universal childcare; passing the Protect, Invest, and Expand Food Security Package; and Investing $175 million in immigration legal services. Their efforts laid critical groundwork to address the community’s most pressing needs.

Students from CPC Homecrest’s SACC Program Explore Identity Through Art at Brooklyn Museum

On January 31st, students from CPC Homecrest’s School Age Child Care (SACC) Program at PS 153 participated in an educational and creative experience at the Brooklyn Museum. After a series of preparatory workshops focused on self-discovery and community building, the students toured the museum to view artwork they had studied. The visit included a hands-on activity where they presented their own creative pieces and designed personalized keychains representing their individual identities. This impactful program was made possible by the UNH Center for Wellbeing Grant.

CPC Advocates in Albany for Living Wages, AAPI Funding, and Immigrant Services

CPC brought community voices to Albany this legislative season. We held our first-ever Dim Sum Legislative Breakfast with more than 30 State Senators and Assembly Members, advocating for living wages, increased funding for AAPI organizations, and expanded immigrant services. We joined coalition partners supporting #SNAP4All, which calls for food assistance for all New Yorkers regardless of immigration status, and #CARE4IF, which fights for accessible immigration legal services. Our Advocacy Fellows shared personal stories on housing and SNAP access and gained hands-on experience in legislative meetings and testimony.

CPC Nan Shan OAC Partners with Buddha Light Foundation to Serve Laba Porridge

On January 22nd, CPC Nan Shan Older Adult Center (OAC) partnered with the Buddha Light Foundation to offer traditional Laba porridge to older adults in preparation for the Lunar New Year. This warm and nutritious dish, made from a blend of grains, beans, nuts, and fruits, symbolizes gratitude, harmony, and good fortune for the coming year. Beyond its physical benefits, serving Laba porridge helps older adults connect with a cherished cultural tradition, evoking memories and reinforcing a strong sense of community and care.
